The best WordPress SEO plugins in 2026 are Yoast SEO, Rank Math, All in One SEO, SEOPress, The SEO Framework, Slim SEO, RankFlect SEO, Squirrly SEO and SmartCrawl. Each one handles titles, meta descriptions and sitemaps; they differ in what the free version adds, such as redirects, AI, llms.txt or AI agent access. Below is what each free version does best, one honest limitation, and who it suits.
Every detail comes from the vendor's own WordPress.org page or documentation, checked in November 2026, including active install counts and the date of the last update. RankFlect SEO is our plugin. It is in the list on the same terms as the others, not at the top by default.
Key takeaways
- All nine plugins below were updated in October or November 2026, so none of them is abandoned.
- The core jobs (titles, descriptions, canonicals, sitemaps, basic schema) are covered by every free version. Choose on the extras you would otherwise pay for.
- Free redirects: Rank Math, Slim SEO, SmartCrawl and RankFlect SEO have them, and SEOPress handles redirects per post.
- Free AI: Slim SEO and RankFlect SEO work with your own API key; Rank Math offers a free AI trial; most others keep AI for paid plans.
- Install only one SEO plugin. Two print duplicate title and meta tags.
What to look for in a WordPress SEO plugin
An SEO plugin handles the technical layer that Google's SEO Starter Guide describes: titles, descriptions, crawl control and structured data. It cannot write good content for you. Before comparing names, list the jobs your site needs:
- Title and description templates, with per-post overrides.
- XML sitemaps that leave out noindexed pages.
- Robots and canonical controls per post.
- Schema for your organization, articles, breadcrumbs and, for shops, products.
- A redirect manager, or a separate redirect plugin.
- An importer for the plugin you use now.
Then add the newer jobs if they matter to you: AI help, llms.txt, AI crawler controls and access for AI agents over MCP.
The 9 best WordPress SEO plugins, compared
1. Yoast SEO
Yoast SEO has more than 10 million active installations, the most of any SEO plugin. What free does best: real-time SEO, readability and inclusive language analysis, with its familiar red, orange and green signals. The free version also manages llms.txt and includes FAQ, How-to and breadcrumbs blocks.
Limitation: the redirect manager, AI tools, the AI crawler bot blocker, IndexNow and up to five keyphrases are Yoast SEO Premium features at the time of writing. Suits: bloggers and writers who want guidance on every post and a very large support community.
2. Rank Math
Rank Math has more than 4 million active installations. What free does best: sheer breadth. The free version includes a redirection manager, a 404 monitor, multiple focus keywords (five by default), Google Search Console and Analytics integration, a role manager, an llms.txt generator and MCP tools for AI assistants.
Limitation: its Content AI needs a Rank Math account and runs on a free trial or paid AI plan, and schema templates, multiple locations and advanced WooCommerce fields are PRO. Suits: people who want the most features in one free plugin and don't mind a lot of settings.
3. All in One SEO (AIOSEO)
All in One SEO has more than 2 million active installations. What free does best: TruSEO content analysis, schema, an XML sitemap, Search Console integration and an llms.txt generator. AIOSEO also says its MCP server and WordPress Abilities API support are free on every plan, including Lite.
Limitation: the redirection manager, local SEO, keyword rank tracking, internal linking and WooCommerce SEO are Pro features per its WordPress.org FAQ, multiple focus keywords are Pro, and AI generation uses AI credits. Suits: sites that expect to buy a plan and want a large, all-in-one paid suite.
4. SEOPress
SEOPress has more than 300,000 active installations. What free does best: content analysis with unlimited target keywords, XML, image and HTML sitemaps, redirects on individual posts, Google Indexing API and IndexNow, GA4 and Matomo integration, migration from many SEO plugins and a built-in MCP server. It promises "no upsells in admin".
Limitation: AI metadata, the site audit, llms.txt, the full redirect manager with 404 monitoring, the schema editor, local SEO and WooCommerce SEO are SEOPress PRO features. Suits: people who want a clean admin and many keywords per post on the free version.
5. The SEO Framework
The SEO Framework has more than 200,000 active installations. What free does best: automatic, guideline-based titles, descriptions, canonicals and JSON-LD with almost no setup, in an unbranded interface with "no ads, no nags".
Limitation: there is no redirect manager, and focus keywords and local SEO come through extensions, some of them premium. Suits: developers and anyone who wants the lightest, quietest plugin possible.
6. Slim SEO
Slim SEO has more than 70,000 active installations. What free does best: automatic meta tags, schema and sitemaps (including image and Google News sitemaps), redirects with 404 link monitoring, and AI titles and descriptions with your own OpenAI, Gemini, Claude or OpenRouter key, including bulk generation.
Limitation: there is little manual control by design, and the visual schema builder, custom JSON-LD, link suggestions and Search Console data are in Slim SEO Pro. Suits: people who want sensible defaults and own-key AI with very few settings.
7. RankFlect SEO
RankFlect SEO is a newer plugin with a much smaller install base than the others here. What free does best: AI on your own key (Anthropic, OpenAI, Gemini, OpenRouter or a local model) and a built-in MCP server with 101 free tools, where agent edits wait for your approval and can be undone from the Change Log. The free plugin also has a redirect manager (301, 302 and 307), a schema manager with a validator, a site audit that runs every 7 days, llms.txt and switches for AI crawlers.
Limitation: the free version has one focus keyword per post, the 404 monitor and broken link checker are Pro, and running the audit on demand is in RankFlect SEO Pro. Suits: site owners who want AI without buying credits, and teams that want AI agents to work on SEO with guardrails. See RankFlect SEO Free vs Pro for the full split.
8. Squirrly SEO
Squirrly SEO has more than 30,000 active installations and now calls itself a GEO plugin. What it does best: AI search readiness. It lists a GEO/AEO audit, AI crawler control, llms.txt and llms-full.txt, IndexNow and Google Indexing API pushes, a Live Assistant while you write, and an MCP server for Claude, ChatGPT and Codex that you approve on your WordPress login screen.
Limitation: the plugin is built around a Squirrly cloud account. Its page says you connect with your email to use it, and points to a PRO plan for higher content marketing and SEO needs, so check which features the free plan covers. Suits: marketers who want guided, step-by-step SEO tasks and AI search audits in one place.
9. SmartCrawl
SmartCrawl has more than 10,000 active installations and was last updated in October 2026, so it is still maintained. What free does best: a setup wizard, an SEO checkup with recommendations, a page analyzer for readability and keyword density, a schema types builder, 301 redirects, breadcrumbs, Moz integration and settings import and export for multisite networks.
Limitation: scheduled audits, URL crawls for broken links and 404s, and automatic linking come with SmartCrawl Pro, which is sold as part of a WPMU DEV membership. Suits: sites already using other WPMU DEV plugins, and multisite networks.
How to choose the best WordPress SEO plugin for your site
Rather than a single winner, match the plugin to the jobs you listed earlier.
- You mainly write blog posts: Yoast SEO for writing guidance, or The SEO Framework if you want it to run itself.
- You want the most free features: Rank Math, especially if you need several focus keywords and a 404 monitor at no cost.
- You want many keywords and a quiet admin: SEOPress.
- You want AI without buying credits: Slim SEO or RankFlect SEO, both with your own API key.
- You want to use AI agents: compare the MCP options in Rank Math, AIOSEO, SEOPress, Squirrly and RankFlect SEO. Check for read-only access, an approval step and undo before letting an agent write to a live site.
- You run a WooCommerce shop: check product schema on the free version. Rank Math and RankFlect SEO output product schema for free; Yoast SEO, AIOSEO and SEOPress keep WooCommerce SEO for paid plans or extensions.
- You manage many sites: favor a plugin that is free on unlimited sites, imports from what your clients use, and has export and import of settings.
Then test before you commit. Install the candidate on a staging copy, import your current plugin's data, and compare titles, descriptions, canonicals and schema on a few key pages. Our WordPress SEO checklist lists what to check.
How to switch to a new SEO plugin safely
The steps are almost the same for every plugin. Here they are with RankFlect SEO as the example:
- Back up the site, or work on a staging copy.
- Install the new plugin and leave the old one active for now, so its data is easy to read.
- Run the importer. In RankFlect SEO it is Tools → Import from another SEO plugin, which reads data from seven SEO plugins plus Redirection and takes a backup first. See import from another SEO plugin.
- Check a sample of pages: title, description, canonical, robots and schema.
- Set site-wide settings such as the title separator, social image and organization details, which most importers don't copy.
- Deactivate the old plugin so only one prints tags, then resubmit your sitemap in Search Console.
If RankFlect SEO matches your list, you can download it free and try the import on staging first.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best SEO plugin for WordPress in 2026?
There is no single best plugin for every site. Yoast SEO and Rank Math are the most installed, Rank Math has the most free modules, SEOPress and The SEO Framework keep the admin quiet, and Slim SEO and RankFlect SEO offer AI on your own key. Pick the one whose free version covers your jobs.
Is Yoast SEO still the best WordPress SEO plugin?
Yoast SEO is still the most installed and its writing guidance is excellent. But several features other plugins include for free, such as a redirect manager and AI crawler controls, are in Yoast SEO Premium at the time of writing. Whether it is best for you depends on whether you need those.
Do I need a paid SEO plugin?
Most sites don't. The free versions on this list cover the technical basics Google looks for. Paid plans mainly add convenience and reporting, such as rank tracking, 404 logs, bulk AI and schema templates.
Can I use two SEO plugins together?
No. Two SEO plugins print duplicate titles, meta descriptions and canonical tags, which confuses search engines. Use one, and import your data from the other before deactivating it.
Is SmartCrawl still updated?
Yes. At the time of writing, its WordPress.org page shows version 3.17.1, last updated in October 2026 and tested with the current WordPress release. It has a smaller install base than the bigger names.
